Waitomo Caves

She……

I have not been to many caves in my life so this was a MUST for me. Although a little touristy the appeal of glowworms and a cool cave system I couldn’t pass up. It just so happened to be just a little off our main track. Todd was not going to go, but I managed to convince him to. As we entered the cave there is a burial site for Maori where you had to wash your hands when entering and exiting the caves. The caves were beautiful, simply beautiful. My little photos don’t quite do it justice and they don’t convay the cold air you felt the deeper we went into the cave system. I of course lagged behind the entire group taking my photos. As the tour guide moved forward with the group she would turn off sections of lights they had to see the formations in order to preserve them and the glowworms. Let me tell you….. I was literally left in the dark a few times and it was eerie trying to find my way and catch up. All in all we ended up paying to see glowing worm poop but also a rich historical and beautiful cave system.

He……

I’ve been to other caves before but what was interesting here was the tour guide and the history. Impressive stalactites and stalagmites and an enormous cavern know as the Cathedral. Ever hear of a glowworm-well I have….look it up! Well worth the cost of admission, but I am defiantly more a man of the sea instead of subterranean.

Entrance to the cave (it is fake, hahahaha)

The little strings to the upper left is the poop of the glow worms that attract their pray

Was nearly impossible to capture with a photo...but it looked like you were looking at the night sky

This Rock is at the bottom of the spiral walkway down to the cave, so that you do not tramp on the burial site of the local Maori tribe. It is said that when entering and the cave and leaving it you need to wash your hands to ward off the spirits. (below photo is of the spiral walk way)
