LANGS BEACH

SHE…….

After leaving Raglan we hit the road headed up north to the East coast. It was our first night with no real plans. In New Zealand there are many places that have public campgrounds, clean facilities, picnic areas, are safe, and free! After being tired of driving we found a pull off with bathrooms on a spot called Langs Beach. We both agreed that we would stay there for the night but first go into Waipu to find a place to eat. Driving into Waipu I saw this bright yellow building called the pizza barn, we turned around and stopped. Walking into this place was AWESOME! Plaid all over the walls old photos of gum miners, a fire place, and the atmosphere was just right. The funny thing is in NZ you have to go to the bar, order your drink and food and pay for it right there. Anyways, we ordered an delicious pizza that had artichokes, olives, fetta, onions, red peppers, and gherkins (pickle) best pizza I have had! We then headed back to our spot at Langs beach to play a game of yahtzee (by the way Todd kicked my butt, but now I am the reigning champion for the last week!) In the middle of the game another camper van pulled up next to us. we go out and introduced ourselves. It was a family from Tasmania on holiday for the month (the rest of the world has figured out time off for family vacation, why hasn’t the US yet)? Anyways, they have a poppy farm and are employed by Johnson and Johnson to grow poppies for morphine (alkaloids) for surgeries. Pretty crazy! They invited us into their camper where we showed them photos of Costa Rica over tea and macadamia nuts. We finished our yahtzee game and went to bed. The next morning we woke up walked the beach where I went into my photo zone and zoned out. It was a beautiful beach and a perfect morning. When leaving I spotted a old cemetery and had to make todd stop for photos. It was a really cool older cemetery,.

HE…….

Was the first night we camped road side. The call it “freedom camping”. Here. We drove most of our day to begin our north of Auckland tour. We weaved our way through Auckland (population 1.2 mil) Which is surrounded by water on almost all sides. We will be returning for the marathon at the end of October, so we veered right and stayed with the Pacific. Still adjusting to driving, culture, jet lag, we were led by the coast line near sundown to a place called Langs Beach. One of thousands of bays in literally what is the “Bay of Islands” We found a great pizza and beer place near by and filled our stomachs and minds reviewing the previous few days. We cruised back to Langs and played Yahtzee before going to bed. However, we were surprised when a Tasmanian family pulled up next to us in a campervan. We joined them for a cup of tea and exchanged stories, went to bed. Upon waking we were pleasantly surprised at how calm they were. Literally like “Lake Erie” and how cold it was. No surf, no chance, we explored and then headed further north with no destination in line.

someones grave with a lawn mower on in and it had an empty beer bottle and glass (he must be having an awesome after life!)
The shells on this grave were beautiful! really cool cemetery (not sure why they fascinate me)

The beginning! He said, She said

Todd and I are going to try and write each of our views on certain places we visit, so you can hear it from different perspectives. Mind you Todd is an English major so he has an upper hand on me but I got the photos down :)

RAGLAN

SHE…….

Have fallen in love with this small quaint surf town! We ended up going there on our first day to pick up a board for Todd. We stopped at a small coffee shop outside of Raglan called Raglan Roast. There we met the owner and surfer Tony. Todd asked him where a good surf shop was to purchase a board. He said that ……… was the best and not to bother anywhere else. When we arrived into the main part of town we parked the car and took a walk. Tucked away between two buildings was a walkway paved in brick. Todd found the board he wanted and after talking to the employee we found out that Tony was the owner!! We ha

d a good laugh and then went to a Asian fish and chips place. It had to be the worst fish and chips I have ever had, yuck! We then drove around to check out the area. Todd got a good surf in and I had tons of fun photographing and walking around. I can’t seem to put the camera down at all during this trip so far. The coastline was breath taking big cliffs in the background. On the way out of town we stopped by the coffee shop again. As we pulled in Tony had a big smile on his face and a chai latte (for me) and coffee for Todd waiting for us. Since then we have been to Raglan once more to hang out with Tony and his crew. What a wonderful bunch of people and we plan on stopping through again. That is what traveling is for me. Other than seeing new things it is all about the people and friends you make along the way. Just a side note, the campgrounds in New Zealand are AWESOME!! Clean communal kitchens, showers, and most have washer and dryers (something you take for granted when you are on the road!

HE……..

Raglan is a surf spot I’ve heard and read about for years. Yet arriving there, the moo had already begun. It was our first drop in on our 70 day wave vacation. The van ride was electric and the jet lag still lingered. I bought a 6’10” that was nice and think as wetsuit, booties, hood, and gloves are a must for the south island. Our man Tony was an interesting character with a small town charm that made me feel very at home. Physically awesome, the topography is a giant bay fed by a wide river. Tony actually paddle boards home every night crossing it. We watched our first rugby game as well, in the only hotel’s bar and dining area, toasting to the all blacks several times. My first surf of the trip was a simple 3 wave warm up w

hich I am hoping urns out to be an epic adventure. adjusting to a new board, wetsuit and unfamiliar line up isn’t easy, but sure fun!
