Cape Reinga

He…..

The “top” of the North Island of New Zealand is Cape Reinga. This is the climax of a huge sand spit blanked by sand dunes called ninety mile beach. Maori culture consider this cape to be the jumping off point for souls as they depart on the journey to their spiritual homeland. It is long and thin and wild and stretches 108 km with the dunes to the west and an Aupouri forest to the east. A powerful spot to stand on indeed as the waters of the Tasman Sea meld with the Pacific here. We took pictures and tried to digest it all, which is impossible of course. Spots like this are insanely powerful to me, nothing but distance in front of you….oceans and skies and the ever present unstoppable wind. Lots of driving this day but when one holds the hand of adventure, even the twists and the turns of the road are exciting.

She……

What a magical place in New Zealand. We drove 90 mile beach and up to near the top of the North Island. Along the way we kept seeing logging trucks and tons of pine forests. When we got to Cape Reinga it was windy but pretty. The Maori say that is where the souls of the dead depart from. Before going on the walk you pass through this structure and the wind made it sound like a flute or recorder. At first I thought that it was a recording they had playing but I soon realized that it was the wind. As we walked you could see a big white lighthouse. When you looked at the sea you could see the Pacific and Tasman Sea merging together. As I looked to the right I noticed this small little beach with this big rock formation and one single tree on it. I then read (in one of the convenient little information blocks along the path) that it is an 800-year-old- pohutukawa tree, the souls are believed to go down its roots and out to sea. Amazing how It is the only thing on the rock and nothing else. When taking the walk you are suppose to not ear or drink anywhere in the area out of respect. It defiantly was a moving place both visually and spiritually.

90 mile beach (the start of it)

Cape Reinga the light house is the small little dot to the right
that would be people walking one of the trails right in the center of the photo (it looks better blown up)

Pacific and Tasman

That would be the 800 year old tree out there all by itself!
